When buying a luxury car, it’s important to know what to expect from it for the years you own it. Of course, no one has a crystal ball that can tell you whether the luxury car you want will be reliable or not. However, sources like Consumer Reports work hard to provide ratings that can indicate whether a car is predicted to be reliable or not.
The five cars below are the least reliable luxury cars found on Consumer Reports’ list of top-rated luxury cars for 2022. Consumer Reports lists luxury cars by size, so these five are a sampling of small from each of those groups.
1. 2022 Cadillac CT5
The 2022 Cadillac CT5 came in at the bottom of the compact luxury car list, just above the Volvo S60 and an Alfa Romeo Giulia. Although Consumer Reports praised its driving dynamics, noting “that it has a combination of dynamics and handling that should impress those who enjoy driving,” editors also noted that its engine power “lacks the glow”.
Additionally, the Cadillac CT5 appeared at the bottom end of the reliability list due to an open recall and low “anticipated owner satisfaction” score.
2. 2022 Volvo S60

The 2022 Volvo S60 ranks 12 out of 13 on the compact luxury car list. Although Consumer Reports praised the S60’s quiet cabin, comfortable interior and “visually appealing exterior,” its “below-average brand reliability” was a concern. Additionally, the 2022 S60 has an open recall regarding its child restraint system, which is a pretty big mark against the predicted reliability rating.
3. 2022 Alfa Romeo Giulia

If you’re looking for the bottom of the barrel when it comes to reliable, compact luxury cars, then look no further than the 2022 Alfa Romeo Giulia. Interestingly enough, Consumer Reports gave the Giulia high marks for performance and handling. her. The publication even noted that “the Italian sedan is brimming with style and character.”
However, it was also noted that “the Giulia’s overall ambience comes across as a notch below the extremely high bar set by cars like the BMW 3 Series and Audi A4”. As such, the Giulia scored very low in terms of predicted reliability.
4. 2022 Maserati Ghibli

Of all the mid-size luxury cars, the 2022 Maserati Ghibli was rated the lowest in terms of reliability. This may be due in part to the fact that the Ghibli is essentially a parts bin of older Chrysler 300 and Mercedes-Benz E-Class chassis bases. Additionally, there are even smaller parts shared with the old Dodge Dart. No wonder Fiat released the Ghibli as a “budget” Maserati, and its low reliability rating shows.
5. 2022 Tesla Model S

Interestingly, Consumer Reports rated the 2022 Tesla Model S as the lowest-rated ultra-luxury sedan. Especially since the folks at iSeeCars rated it as one of the most reliable luxury sedans. But for this list, the Model S got low marks because it has eight open pulls and a weird yoke steering wheel that makes “major compromises in usability, handling and comfort.”
The least reliable luxury cars
The luxury segment is filled with impeccable options that match their high prices. However, these five examples show that it’s a good idea to take a closer look at what you’re buying before pulling the trigger. Especially when you are shopping in the luxury car segment.
