A major winter storm is expected to hit much of North Carolina this week.
The National Weather Service said in an outlook that the storm has an increased chance of bringing snow, sleet and freezing rain to parts of NC, as well as upstate South Carolina and northeast Georgia.
As storms begin to hit western North Carolina tomorrow, Thursday, January 22nd, here’s what to know.

According to a hazardous weather outlook from the Western Service issued at 3:27 a.m. on Wednesday, January 21, a “major winter storm” is expected to hit the Piedmont and western regions of North Carolina as well as upstate South Carolina and northeast Georgia beginning Thursday, January 22.
The storm will bring “significant wintry precipitation” across the region over the weekend, hazardous travel and the potential for power outages, potentially lasting into early next week. Cold winds will also increase Monday night, January 26 through Tuesday morning, January 27.

Snow is likely in the Asheville area, according to weather service forecasts Friday, January 23A 40% chance of snow during the late night hours with a low around 23 degrees.
Un Saturday, January 24 The chance continues, with an 80% chance of snow before 4 p.m., followed by snow and freezing rain, and a daytime high around 30 degrees. Overnight, snow and sleet will continue before 2am, followed by a 100% chance of snow, sleet and sleet. The minimum night temperature will be around 17 degrees.
It’s the last day of snow chances Sunday, January 2570% chance of snow and freezing rain before 3pm, then snow. The daytime high will be 33 degrees. Overnight, a 30% chance of snow remains before midnight, with a low of around 14 degrees.
