Night Stalker AH-6 Little Bird helicopter destroyed at forward landing site in Iran

New pictures of which have come out appear to show downed Special Operations C-130s (MC-130Js Commando IIs) at a forward improvised airfield in Iran. The penance operations location served as the hub (and forward arming and refueling point or FARP) for the rescue mission of a downed F-15E weapons system officer. You can read our latest coverage on the rescue here. It has been reported that two C-130s were destroyed in place as they could not be released and three more planes were brought in and taken out by special operations forces. Among the wreckage are two charred wreckage of MH-6/AH-6 Little Birds of the 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment, known as Night Stalkers.

As is usually the case, images of crash sites appear authentic after a cursory examination, but may change in the future.

Here we see a small destroyed bird on the right, with the C-130’s hulk on the left.

These helicopters, if in the AH-6 configuration, would likely be delivered to the landing site and provide close air support and force protection to a large force deployed there. The report says it may now no As originally reported there was a massive firefight on the ground, but the Iranians were shot down from the air as they tried to reach the base. A video purportedly showing one of these engagements appears to indicate that the firing aircraft may have been an AH-6.

In the MH-6 configuration, smaller birds could also be used to aid and assist in pilot evacuation. The small birds can be configured in AH-6 attack and MH-6 attack configurations.

Indeed the force protection role for this type of mission is crucial for the AH-6. Night Stalker AH-6 crews train a lot for this. The tiny birds can be quickly transported to locations aboard aircraft as small as the C-130, but it’s their ability to roll out and fly in minutes that makes them well-suited for this mission set. The MC-130 can serve as a transport for small birds, a weapons hauler and a gas station on the ground.

You can read all about the little bird’s ability to deploy quickly anywhere in our past feature linked here.

Smaller birds could possibly fly directly to the site, and then refuel on the ground with an MC-130J and operate out of a temporary base, although these aircraft have limited range, even with auxiliary fuel tanks. Commercial flights to Kuwait or the northern Persian Gulf would also fly directly into Iranian airspace. a lot Risky and much needed in Little Bird’s range. Overall, it looks like an option a lot possibility

Why the small birds were destroyed at the site is not clear. The evacuation of the force was probably done in great haste, especially because of the immobility of the two C-130s. If small birds get on them, there may not be time (or room) to load them onto a replacement plane. They can also be damaged by enemy fire. If they flew directly on themselves, the mission might not have gone as planned and the MC-130s might not have been able to refuel on the ground. There are many possibilities.

Destroying the trapped special operations aircraft is very important as they are loaded with sensitive sensors, communication, defensive systems and more.

However, the inclusion of small birds is another indication of how complex this mission was, thrown together in a matter of hours. It’s also a reminder of how versatile and forward deployable the MH/AH-6s really are.

Update: 6:02 AM PDT-

The landing zone is geolocation in the southern part of Isfahan. This puts it about 200 miles from the Iranian coastline and about 230 miles from the land border. It is highly unlikely that small birds would have made this journey on their own (maybe ruled it almost entirely) out of strategic issues in doing so.
