Can you imagine seeing a grizzly while enjoying nature? It would be heart-racing enough to spot one from a distance, but imagine casually walking into your camp chairs, literally feet from you?

Well, that’s exactly what happened to a photographer with ice in his veins – a giant grizzly suddenly stopped and sat next to him. His camera did not shake!

It’s a short clip, but one that begins with a jaw-dropping, eerily quiet yet tense moment. In the background, you can see some snow-capped mountains with a large, open green space in front of, wait for it — a giant grizzly bear.

Almost comically, on the right side of the screen is a lawn chair, as if the bear had been invited for a daytime hangout. Unfazed by the presence of the man on his right, the bear looks around and casually moves forward towards the river running downstream.

As a tourist would, he stops to take in the view. At this point, he is only a few feet from the man’s lawn chair and the man. Its size can be fully appreciated at this angle – and so can its powerful claws.

A grizzly’s slow panting and heavy breathing may look like sadness or boredom to humans, but in wild bears, these animals may be signs of cooling down after the physical exertion of processing their surroundings or fishing.

Attributing human emotion to bears should be left to cartoons, but the scene is very rare, and they both start to feel like they need this time with a friend out of the clear aura of running water.

The cameraman holds the camera still, and the grizzly stares into the water, not acknowledging the presence of the man or the small site he has created for himself. White birds fly in the background as the bear decides this is a good place to rest.

The bear sits back and places its front paws just in front of its torso, resting on the ground. Suddenly, he gets up and starts walking towards the man. The man pans the camera and quickly responds by saying “hey, hey, hey” to the bear.

The bear, disheartened, walks around the man and away from him. At the end of the short clip, the camera cuts to another camera pointing towards the water, where somewhere around 10 grizzly bears can be seen. This cameraman probably wasn’t counting on such a close encounter, but his nerves of steel paid off as he captured some truly epic close-up footage of this giant bear.

Would you keep your cool if a giant grizzly approached you?

A grizzly encounter would be a major challenge for the average person. The encounter took place in the McNeil River State Game Sanctuary, where bears have become ‘relatively indifferent’ to humans. Because bears and humans follow strict rules of coexistence, the bear felt comfortable enough to rest near the photographer without perceiving him as a threat or food source.

Grizzly bears weigh upwards of 700 pounds — males are much heavier than females. A large female can weigh up to 350 pounds. Although grizzlies are much larger and heavier than black bears, they are generally smaller than polar bears and the larger Kodiak bears found on the islands of southwestern Alaska. With a bite force of more than 1,100 PSI, the grizzly has enough power to crush heavy bones and dense materials—compared to the force needed to crack a bowling ball.

They can be distinguished from black bears by their concave-looking faces and muscular shoulder humps that connect to grizzlies’ spines for extra strength when digging. The very long, sharp claws on their front feet give them the extra ability to dig for food and excavate their burrows. Color should not be relied upon for identification. Black bears can actually be brown, cinnamon, or even blond. Instead, look for the grizzly’s prominent shoulder hump and concave facial profile, which black bears lack.

Is it normal for grizzly bears to approach humans?

Fortunately, bears do not consider humans prey. Visitors to national parks known for bears, such as Yellowstone, are as likely to be killed by lightning as a bear attack. Grizzly bears are curious, with good eyesight and excellent memories, hearing and sense of smell. They are also intelligent and solitary; They will change their habits to avoid humans and like most any animal, they have what is called a “critical space”, an area around them that they will protect. These bears are more likely to be indifferent to human presence, although every bear encounter will be different.

Staying calm is important during any encounter with a wild animal and if you are traveling in an area with bears, you should prepare yourself for how to proceed.

Where do Grizzly Bears live?

Unless you live in Alaska, Idaho, Montana, Washington, or Wyoming – you don’t have to worry about grizzlies. They were once very widespread but have become almost extinct in some areas and still suffer from habitat loss. There are approximately 21,000 grizzlies in Canada. Life expectancy is 20-25 years.
