According to an affidavit, three weeks before Michael McKee’s murder, Monique Teppe had to excuse herself during a night out with friends.
McKee was allegedly arrested the same day in Columbus on neighborhood watch breaking into Tepes’ property, according to the affidavit
Investigators did not say whether Monique and Spencer were aware of the situation at the time
Eight years after her divorce, Monique Tepe was still dealing with the aftermath of her first marriage.
Three weeks before she and her dentist husband Spencer Tepe were found dead in their Columbus, Ohio, home, Monique had to excuse herself from a night out with friends because of ex-husband Michael McKee’s involvement, according to a probable cause affidavit.
Mackey is now accused of killing Monique and Spencer on Dec. 30, while the couple’s two young children slept a few feet away.
Three weeks ago, on Dec. 6, a weekend trip to Indiana — a week before Monique and Spencer’s fifth anniversary — the incident described in the affidavit unfolded.
Monique and Spencer were joined by friends on a trip to watch the Big Ten Championship football game, featuring their alma mater, Ohio State University.
The affidavit states that in the middle of the game, Monique suddenly informed the group that she needed to return to her hotel room, but offered no explanation.
Friends later told investigators that Spencer had informed them that Monique was “concerned about her ex-husband’s involvement,” according to the affidavit.
Around the same time, McKee was captured on neighborhood surveillance footage allegedly breaking into Tapes’ property in Columbus, police said.
He reportedly spent a few hours at their property before leaving.
Investigators have not said whether Monique and Spencer were aware of the situation at the time, but the affidavit describes a history of alleged threats McKee made to Monique over the years.
According to the affidavit, a friend told police that McKee once told Monique she would always be his wife, and threatened to buy the house next door if she left him.
The affidavit does not say whether McKee allegedly knew the Tepess and their two young children would not be home when they drove more than 400 miles from Illinois on Dec. 6.

The affidavit alleges that McKee made the trip in the same silver SUV that was later captured on neighborhood surveillance cameras arriving in the Tapes neighborhood in the early morning hours of Dec. 30, before killing the couple inside their home.
The same car was seen leaving the neighborhood shortly after Monique and Spencer died, police said.
Investigators were able to connect McKee to the vehicle and later tracked it to a medical facility where McKee worked in the city of Rockford, about 80 miles west of Chicago.
Federal agents took McKee into custody near that facility on January 10, and a week later, a grand jury indicted the surgeon on four counts of aggravated murder and a single count of aggravated burglary.
Police later said a search of McKee’s property turned up the weapon they believe was used to kill Tepes.
McKee made his first court appearance in Ohio on January 23, at which time his attorney entered a plea of not guilty to all charges.
A friend of Monique and Mackie previously told PEOPLE that he was still fixated on his ex-wife when he moved on after the divorce.
“She thought she couldn’t live without him. That she needed him. So for her to thrive [in her new marriage]It just destroyed his fragile little ego,” the friend said.
