Adam Schiff faced off at the polls, showing overwhelming support for requiring photo ID to vote

Sen. Adam Schiff, D-Calif., was confronted by a poll that found most Americans support requiring a photo ID to vote — which the liberal senator said would alienate voters.

ABC’s Jonathan Carl began by asking Schiff if Democrats and Republicans could come to an agreement on supporting showing photo ID at the polls, as Republicans are pushing the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act. Some Democrats are comparing the SAVE Act to “Jim Crow 2.0.”

“Jonathan, basically what you’re just asking is this: Republicans have created distrust in the election by claiming any fraud, and we shouldn’t use the distrust they’ve created to enact voter suppression legislation, which is the Savings Act, which requires people to have birth certificates or passports — half a million people in the U.S. have passports, and I don’t know where millions of people even find birth certificates,” Schiff replied.

Carl said he was asking Schiff a different question, specifically whether he supports photo ID.

“But I was asking you a different question: photo ID. Because, you know, there was a recent poll, show there were a lot of polls, but in a recent Pew poll, 83% of adults support requiring photo ID to vote. 71 percent of Democrats support requiring photo ID,” Carl said. “Is that something you can support? And if not, why?”

Schiff argued that this would still “disenfranchise” people.

“It’s still going to be something that gets people who don’t have proper real ID, driver’s license ID, who don’t have the required ID to vote, even if they’re citizens. It’s just another way of trying to suppress the vote,” Schiff said.

An August 2025 Pew Research poll found that 95% of Republicans support showing identification to vote.

Schiff added, “And I think we want to discourage more citizens from voting when they’re attacking the same election, they’re trying to eliminate absentee ballot voting, while they’re trying to be able to register to vote at the DMV or by mail. So, this is part of a broader effort. The right direction.”

Sen. Chuck Schumer, DN.Y. has said that the SAVE Act represents “Jim Crow 2.0.”

“For example, if you change — you’re a married woman and you change your last name, you won’t be able to show ID, and you’ll be discriminated against. If you can’t find a birth certificate, or a valid ID, you’ll be discriminated against. It’s evil and bad. And I told our Republican colleagues, you won’t get a single vote on the DECRA. Senate. Let’s revive Jim Crow across the country and when the American people hear what it’s doing and what it’s doing, they’re against it too. Will be,” Schumer said Thursday during an appearance on MS NOW’s “Morning Joe.”
