A Southern right whale Filmed getting up close and making gentle contact with paddleboarders off the coast of Argentina.
Southern right whales are slow-moving baleen whales that migrate between Antarctic feeding grounds and warm coastal breeding grounds in South America, Africa, and Australia.
Although these whales can be curious and surface-active, wildlife experts recommend maintaining a safe distance because they are powerful wild animals protected by law in many areas.
When paddleboarding in the ocean, you never know what kinds of animals you’ll encounter. But we’re guessing that getting a little push from a southern right whale probably isn’t what you were expecting. This paddleboarder was treated to a boost from a gentle whale, who swam up to their board.
Set to music, the video shows a whale as it approaches a paddleboarder. Swimming effortlessly through the water, the whale moves right behind the board and appears to make gentle contact from behind. He just keeps sitting under the board. We can only imagine how excited the paddleboarder was to see the whales up close and personal. Wisely, they remained calm and let the encounter unfold.
A whale breaks the surface twice before connecting with another whale. The two animals mostly stay below the surface, breaking out periodically. We’re not sure how much the paddleboarders were able to see from their position, but the drone captured the most amazing display from above.

This drone footage was captured off the coast of Argentina. Southern right whales are a type of baleen whale, meaning they use plates in their mouths to filter small organisms from the water for food. They have no teeth. Historically, right whales have been hunted for their blubber and meat.
They live in warm waters during the mating season and are often found near South America, Africaand Australia. At other times, they live as far south as Antarctica. Southern right whales are known for their surface activity and occasional curiosity around boats. They also like to stay close to the surface and engage in flips, strikes, rolls, and many other acrobatics for various purposes.
Right whales are slow swimmers, which you can clearly see in this video footage. This isn’t the first time whales have interacted with paddleboarders. Whales approach boats, boards and kayaks in surprising numbers in the wild. However, it is important to keep your distance from whales and other wild animals. Some species can be aggressive, although right whales are beautiful and peaceful. Still, wild animals are best left alone. If someone takes an interest in you, like in this video, the best thing to do is try to capture the wonderful encounter on video for the rest of us to enjoy.

Whales are very social and naturally very curious animals. Although whales have been heavily hunted in the past, in some areas where wildlife tourism is regulated, they can tolerate the presence of boats nearby. This behavior occurs not only in right whales but also with blue whales, gray whales, and killer whales.
There are instances of whales approaching swimmers, kayakers or paddleboarders. Large whales rarely show aggression toward humans, but they are powerful wild animals and can be inadvertently injured. And while it may not be common to see them pushing you while you relax on your paddleboard, these interactions aren’t unheard of either.
