Need to run an unexpected errand during the holidays?
This year Christmas Eve and Christmas fall on Wednesday and Thursday respectively. Many banks, post offices and public services are often closed or have reduced hours in observance of the holiday.
And this year, President Donald Trump signed an executive order declaring Christmas Eve a federal holiday. Many Americans may wonder how this affects the places where government employees work.
Here’s what businesses and public services will be open and closed in Greater Cincinnati on December 24 and December 25.
According to the Federal Reserve, banks will follow their normal schedule of opening for business on December 24. Some branches may close early on Christmas Eve, so it’s best to check with your local branch for its specific holiday hours.
FedEx Office locations will have modified hours on Christmas Eve, with some locations closing early. It’s best to check your local store for special hours of operation on December 24th. Early on-call and drop box pickups for FedEx Express Parcel and Air Freight services will be available in some areas on Christmas Eve, according to the FedEx website. FedEx LTL freight services are not available.
UPS Store locations will be open, according to the UPS website. UPS will provide normal delivery service on Christmas Eve, but has reduced pickup service. UPS on-call pickup service is available for air and international air packages. UPS Next Day Air packages picked up on Christmas Eve will be scheduled for delivery on December 26. There will be no UPS Ground Service pickups that day.
Post offices will be open for retail transactions on December 24, and mail will be delivered on those days.
The City of Cincinnati’s trash collection schedule will not be affected on Christmas Eve.
Cincinnati Public Schools, Covington Independent Schools, Newport Independent Schools, Kenton County Schools, Boone County Schools and Campbell County Schools will be closed for winter break.
Hamilton County government offices will be open. Offices in Kenton and Boone counties will be closed. In Campbell County, Fiscal Court offices will be closed, the Property Assessor’s office will be open, Sheriff’s offices will be open for a half day, 8 a.m. to 12 p.m., and the County Clerk’s office will be open for a half day, 8:30 a.m. to 12 p.m.
Federal agencies will be closed Christmas Eve. Some employees may still have to report to work at the discretion of agency leaders, according to Trump’s order.
Cincinnati and Hamilton County Public Libraries will be closed on Christmas Eve. Campbell County Public Library, Kenton County Public Library and Boone County Public Library will also be closed on Christmas Eve.
The New York Stock Exchange and Nasdaq will close at 1 p.m. on Christmas Eve.
Most banks will be closed on Christmas, including Chase Bank, the Federal Reserve Bank, Bank of America, Wells Fargo and TD Bank.
FedEx Custom Critical Services are available. For more information, call 1-800-762-3787. All other locations and operations are unavailable, according to FedEx’s website.
According to UPS, limited UPS locations will be open on Christmas. Check with your local store for specific hours of operation. UPS does not offer pickup or delivery service on Christmas, according to its website. UPS Express Critical Service provided by Marken is available. U.S. Postal Service post offices will be closed, and mail will not be delivered on Christmas Day, according to the agency’s website.
If you are a city resident and your regular trash collection day is Wednesday, trash will be collected on December 26. Collections for the rest of the week will be delayed by one day.
