Ethereum should not wait until the last moment before working towards quantum resistance, co-founder Vitalik Buterin says

“We must resist the trap of delaying quantum-resistance until the last possible moment in the name of eking. [sic] Take out more efficiencies for a while,” Buterin said on Jan. 12 at X. “Individual users have that right, but the protocol does not.”

Buterin said Ethereum holders should be able to say the protocol cryptographically for the next 100 years “as soon as possible” and “as a point of pride.”

Don’t miss:

Concerns about the threat of quantum computing to cryptocurrencies have grown since the launch of Google’s Willow chip last year. Many observers now fear that the development of a quantum computer capable of breaking the cryptography that secures many cryptocurrencies is no longer a distant reality.

Buterin’s comments on quantum-proofing Ethereum were part of a longer post calling for the protocol to mature enough that it can continue to function as intended with developers moving away.

“Ethereum itself must pass the walkway test,” he said. “Ethereum is the home for reliable and trust-minimum applications in finance, governance or elsewhere. It must support applications such as tools – once purchased hammer – services that lose all functionality once the vendor loses interest in maintaining them (or worse, hack or extract value).

Beyond quantum resistance, Buterin said Ethereum must scale to support thousands of transactions per second, embrace complete ledger abstraction, be resistant to denial-of-service attacks and maintain a censorship-resistant block-building model.
