Foreign tourists to Việt Nam in the first quarter of 2024 exceed pre-pandemic numbers

HÀ NỘI — International arrivals in Việt Nam in March 2024 reached nearly 1.6 million, up 4.4 percent from the previous month, according to the latest report from the General Statistics Office.

This means that in the first quarter of 2024, international arrivals to the country reached over 4.6 million, a whopping 72 percent increase compared to the same period last year.

The first quarter 2024 number is also 3.2 percent higher than the first quarter of 2019, a year before the COVID-19 pandemic hit and also when Việt Nam recorded its highest number of arrivals of over 18 million, which shows that recovery is on the right track for the tourism sector.

This positive result is due to favorable visa policies, tourism incentive programs and the efforts of the government and local tourism businesses.

Visitors from Asian countries continued to make up the largest share of the total, with over 3.5 million arrivals (81.6 percent year-on-year growth), followed by visitors from European countries with 661,800 arrivals (71.9 percent). Over 302,300 visitors were from the Americas (up 14.5 percent), 143,700 were from Oceania (up 37.2 percent) and 13,100 from Africa (up 112.1 percent).

Of the total of over 4.6 million international arrivals in Việt Nam in the first quarter of this year, air travel accounted for 83.6 percent; road trips accounted for 13.5 percent and sea trips for 2.9 percent.

Revenue from accommodation and dining services in the first quarter of 2024 is estimated at 174.8 trillion VNĐ (about 7 billion USD). Revenue from tourism operations is estimated at VNĐ14.1 trillion, accounting for 0.9 percent of the country’s total service revenue, 46.3 percent more compared to the same period last year.

First quarter 2024 revenues for several localities increased significantly compared to the same period last year, including Đà Nẵng (69 percent increase), HCM City (59 percent), Cần Thơ (57.7 percent increase), Hà Nội (47.6 percent cent) and Quảng Ninh (18.5 percent).

The number of Vietnamese outbound travelers in March reached 537,000, making a total of 1.2 million for the quarter, up 11.5 percent compared to the same period last year.

In 2024, Việt Nam tourism aims to welcome 18 million international visitors, 110 million domestic tourists, with a total revenue of VND 850 trillion.

The Việt Nam National Tourism Authority (VNAT) under the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism said the entire industry must communicate, promote and advertise effectively in the new situation, clearly identify target markets and approach customers directly to promote destination information. .

Also, the tourism industry should strengthen cooperation with central and local authorities, as well as with businesses, to implement tourism promotion and advertising activities.

VNAT is studying and consulting the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism for issuing relevant regulations to adapt the activities related to the Tourism Development Fund to increase the effectiveness of promotional activities and to support the development of tourism.

In addition, according to VNAT, tourism is a comprehensive economic sector and international visitors to Việt Nam come not only for leisure purposes, but also for MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences and Exhibitions), healthcare and sports activities. Therefore, in addition to meeting basic needs such as accommodation and transportation, it is necessary to develop more diverse products and services to cater to these tourists.
