According to rapper and business mogul Jay-Z, artists are often criticized when success starts paying off.
He recently told GQ magazine that the reaction makes him feel at odds with how he was raised with the idea of the American Dream.
Jay-Z said, “The only thing I ever heard was the American Dream. “If you pull yourself up by the bootstraps, you can make it. I listened to it my whole life – until we started to succeed. Then it was like: You’re selling because you’re making money.”

“I make art first and then I make sure my art is compensated,” he said.
Jay-Z said he didn’t get where he is by exploiting people or taking advantage of loopholes in the system.
“I’m a realist. It’s not an idealist,” he said. “People talk about how they want to see the world. You can never win that way.”
The moral line he questions
Jay-Z pushed back on a broader critique of extreme wealth — that no “good” billionaire exists and that building that level of wealth requires exploitation.
“Your morals define who you are,” he told GQ. “Your morality is not defined by a dollar amount.”

Jay-Z questioned where that cutoff begins, arguing that it makes little sense if someone below a threshold is acceptable while someone above it is not. He said that no matter what the arrangement was, he succeeded by working hard.
Jay-Z said that people do what they choose to do regardless of wealth and that more money expands what they can do.
Jay-Z became hip-hop’s first billionaire in 2019, Forbes reported, with assets linked to his catalog and business empire spanning music, streaming, sports management and liquor. According to Forbes, his net worth is now about 2.8 billion dollars. He has since been joined on the list of music billionaires by Rihanna, Beyoncé and Taylor Swift.
“A man with a lot of money can do a lot of good,” Jay-Z told GQ. “It’s a choice.”
