Keith Olbermann, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Tim Walz More Call for Response to ICE Shooting: ‘Activate the National Guard’

Senate Democrats should “activate the National Guard” in response to the second shooting of a U.S. citizen by ICE agents in Minneapolis, Sen. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez wrote on social media Saturday. The AOC was one of dozens of political voices calling for a stronger response to the ongoing immigration actions in the city.

“Americans are being killed in the streets by their government. Our Constitution is being torn apart and our rights are being eroded. Resist,” she wrote. “Senate Dems must stop ICE funding this week. Activate the National Guard. We can and must stop it.”

“Governor, you have an army of Minnesota National Guards. Deploy them. Arrest ICE agents. Enforce the law and protect your people against Trump’s terrorists,” wrote Keith Olbermann in a response to Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz on Saturday.

(Waltz wrote Saturday morning, “I spoke to the White House this morning after yet another horrific shooting by federal agents. This happened in Minnesota. This is tragic. The president must end this operation. Get thousands of violent, untrained officers out of Minnesota. Now.”

Massachusetts Senate candidate Seth Moulton insisted that ICE agents should be prosecuted. He wrote on X, “You are cowards. You are all absolute, pathetic, untrained, unprofessional cowards. You need to be prosecuted, not just Todd Lyons and the rest of you.”

Representative Hakim Geoffrey also suggested the same. “Another US citizen has been brutally murdered by masked and lawless DHS agents in Minneapolis,” he wrote on social media. “Donald Trump’s extremists have unleashed this carnage on America’s streets. They must all be held criminally accountable to the fullest extent of the law.”

Fred Guttenberg, whose daughter Jamie was shot and killed at Parkland High School in 2018, suggested former US presidents can have an impact. “Just a thought for @JoeBiden, @BarackObama, @BillClinton, and George Bush, but today would be a great day for all former living presidents to go to Minnesota together and help protect democracy,” he wrote.

Megyn Kelly suggested the agency and Donald Trump take action differently, though she still found it an insulting way to do so. The president “must pull ICE out of MN today and declare that there will be no immigration enforcement in MN. All illegals in the US are encouraged to go there,” she wrote on social media. “And if an illegal is found outside of MN and deported, they cannot apply for re-entry.”

Others have drawn attention to the behavior of agents on the ground.

“The behavior of these agents is appalling. Clearly untrained,” Chuck Todd wrote before citing an AP article. “‘After the shooting, an angry mob gathered and taunted the federal officers, calling them ‘cowards’ and telling them to go home. One officer jokingly responded as he walked away, telling them: ‘Boo hoo.’ Elsewhere agents shoved a screaming protester into a car.’

“So the “everyone should be armed” Second Amendment crowd is using the fact that one person was armed (maybe) as justification? asked CNN’s Adam Kinzinger. “Is that right?”

Sarah Longwell, founder and publisher of Bulwark, reported that ICE agents are not cooperating with local authorities in Minneapolis. “Turn on your TV and watch this update. I can’t believe it. DHS/ICE is not cooperating with local law enforcement. And they seem deeply saddened by this. They have to work off the video like the rest of us.”
