Massive hydrogen reservoir discovered under an Albanian mine could be an untapped source of clean energy

A massive reservoir of hydrogen may be hidden deep beneath a chrome mine in Albania, a new study has revealed.

The reservoir is located within a part of the Earth’s crust and mantle that once lay at the bottom of the ocean and was scraped off when tectonic plate slipped under another plate. The crumpled slab of crust and mantle was thrust into the earth between 45 and 15 million years ago and formed a 1,900-mile (3,000-kilometer) long belt of rock, known as an ophiolite, that stretches from present-day Turkey to Slovenia.
