A neuroscientist is revealing five simple things you can do every day to boost your brain and improve your memory – from sleeping eight to 10 hours a night to practicing mindfulness.

Brain health is a critical, but often overlooked, aspect of our overall health and well-being: protecting it can potentially reduce the risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease and dementia, which is on the rise.

An estimated 6.7 million Americans age 65 and older will have Alzheimer’s disease in 2023, according to the Alzheimer’s Association. Younger people can also suffer from this condition.

Neuroscientist and mental wellness coach Rachelle Summers shared the healthy habits she encourages everyone to adopt in a TikTok she posted last year that resurfaced this week.

Sleep

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends that adults get at least seven hours of sleep per night. fake images

“Get enough sleep,” advises Summers. “It’s actually during the night, while we’re sleeping, that we consolidate long-term memories.”

He added: “I recommend between eight and ten hours a night.”

Many Americans are struggling to achieve this important goal, but some members of Generation Z take their sleep schedule very seriously.

Exercise

Summers also emphasizes the importance of a consistent exercise routine and be sure to include aerobic exercise.

“Aerobic exercise has been shown to improve memory in both young and older adults,” Summers said.

Aerobic (or cardio) exercise is any physical activity that increases your heart rate and the flow of oxygen throughout your body to produce energy, such as walking, running, or swimming.

Summers explained that these movements cause blood to flow to the brain to support its function.

Consciousness

Mindfulness is the practice of focusing on the mind and body to sit fully in the present moment.

Summers also mentioned mindfulness as a great way to improve brain health.

“Mindfulness has been shown to increase the thickness of the prefrontal cortex, a region of the brain associated with attention and memory,” Summers shared.

She encourages people to meditate or journal to practice mindfulness.

“Activities that challenge your brain, such as learning a new language or learning to play an instrument, can improve memory performance,” Summers said.

“These activities stimulate the brain and can promote the growth of new neural connections,” he continued.

Recovery

Working on recovery will help you stay alert, Summers advised.

“That means practicing remembering things by heart without using Google,” he said.

Doing this strengthens the connections that keep your memory and knowledge in your mind, making it more likely that you will be able to remember it in the future.
