Publications | Investing in the Big Indian Broiler Business

Mitsui & Co., Ltd. (“Mitsui”, Headquarters: Tokyo, President & CEO: Kenichi Hori) has decided to invest in Sneha Farms Pvt. Ltd. (“Sneha”), one of the leading broiler producers in India. After the investment, the company will become an affiliate of Mitsui.

With the country’s GDP per capita reaching US$2,400, chicken consumption is poised to enter an expansion phase. India has a sizeable non-vegetarian population and has achieved steady economic growth and sustainable development. Sneha is a chicken supplier based in Hyderabad, the capital of the state of Telangana. Its integrated operations include feed production, broiler production, meat processing and packing, transportation and retail. It is one of India’s leading companies in terms of production volume. Through the collaboration with Mitsui, Sneha also aims to expand its share in the Indian market and plans to double its production over the next five years. Additionally, Sneha is targeting full-scale market entry for high value-added food products such as frozen and chilled ready-to-eat foods.

Mitsui will continue to contribute to the sustainable supply of chicken and other protein sources, for which demand is expected to increase.

Chicken has the best feed efficiency and smallest environmental footprint of any livestock product. It is subject to certain religious restrictions and demand is expected to increase worldwide. For many years, Mitsui has built an integrated chicken production business, especially in the Japanese market, through its group companies, including its subsidiary Prifoods Co., Ltd. Using the knowledge accumulated from its activities in Japan, Mitsui is also expanding its business overseas. It invested in Zalar Holding SA (“Zalar Holding”), the largest broiler business in Morocco and Senegal, in 2018, and invested in Wadi Poultry SAE, the largest broiler producer in Egypt, in 2024.

Meanwhile in the marine products field, Mitsui is strengthening the cultivation and processing of shrimp, which provide high protein and low fat with a short production cycle, just like chicken. In 2019, it invested in Vietnam Minh Phu Seafood Joint Stock Company, the world’s largest shrimp producer and processor, and invested in Industrial Pesquera Santa Priscila, the world’s largest shrimp farming company, in 2024.

Mitsui has identified “Creating Wellness Ecosystems” as one of the key strategic initiatives in its Mid-Term Management Plan 2026. By supplying healthy food, Mitsui strives to contribute to improving the quality of today’s consumer’s lifestyles increasingly diverse. Through this investment, Mitsui aims to expand the added value of its food and nutrition business group, improve health and well-being through food and thereby support the realization of a richer and brighter life for people.
