Seventeen restaurants were closed due to health hazards between July 12 and August 24 in the San Fernando Valley area.
According to reports from the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health, food establishments had their health permits suspended for parasites, unsafe food temperatures or sewage discharges.
Food establishments whose permits have been suspended must be closed until another inspection finds that the problems have been fixed. Closures may occur during routine and owner-initiated inspections, complaint investigations, and reinspections.
The department did not provide details about the nature of the vermin — such as the type, number and where they were found at the facility.
If a food facility is closed due to vermin infestation, sewage problems, or lack of running water, an additional seven points are lost on top of the four points deducted for major health violations. Every time two major health hazards are observed, such as unsafe food temperatures, the facility loses an additional three points on its inspection score.
