A clip shared on YouTube by the Brave Paws channel shows a reticulated python (Python mesh) shrinking the dog while the boys try to separate the two animals using long sticks. Reticulated pythons are non-venomous constrictor snakes and one of the largest snake species in the world, native to parts of South and Southeast Asia.

How to hunt a constrictor snake

A python kills prey through constriction, a process in which the snake twists its body around the animal and tightens its grip as the prey exhales. This prevents the lungs from filling with air and can cause suffocation or circulatory collapse. Contraction is an automatic physiological response to movement, not a sign of aggression or intent.

When threatened or disturbed, non-venomous pythons may strike defensively, even if they lack venom. This behavior is to ward off perceived threats rather than to capture prey.

What happens in the video

In the footage, the boys use sticks to maintain distance while trying to control the snake’s head and body. At one point, a boy pins the python’s head to the ground, allowing them to pull the coils away from the dog. After being freed, the dog runs away.

Do pythons eat pets?

Pythons are opportunistic predators whose diet varies by species, size and habitat. In their native ranges, they are known to eat animals such as rodents, birds, reptiles, monkeys, pigs, wallabies and deer.

While dogs and cats are not common prey, there have been cases of large pythons attacking small pets, especially in areas where larger python species live near human settlements. Such incidents are uncommon and usually involve very large snakes and small animals.

Pythons rely more on scent and heat detection than sight when hunting, using specialized sensory organs to locate warm-blooded prey.

Be safe around large snakes

Wildlife experts recommend keeping pets under supervision or indoors where large predators are present. If a large snake is encountered, officials recommend maintaining distance and contacting local wildlife professionals rather than attempting to intervene.

Encounters like the one shown in the video are rare, but they highlight how quickly wildlife interactions can become dangerous — for both animals and people.
