The Minnesota shooting of a Venezuelan man is the latest in which video evidence contradicts ICE accounts

Federal authorities announced Friday that they will investigate two immigration officials who made false statements under oath about a shooting in Minneapolis last month.

It’s one of at least five shootings in which immigration officials said initial accounts were later contradicted by video evidence. Among them were the fatal Minneapolis shootings of Renee Goode and Alex Pretty, where bystander video raised questions about how they were initially described.

The probe Friday came hours after a federal judge dismissed felonious assault charges against two Venezuelan men accused of beating an Immigration and Customs Enforcement officer with a broom handle and snow shovel on Jan. 14. The officer, whose name was not released in court, fired one shot from a handgun. thigh

In an unusual reversal, prosecutors asked to dismiss the cases because they said new video evidence contradicted allegations made against the men in a criminal complaint and in a hearing last month.

Here’s a look at how the five shootings were initially described and what was learned later:

Julio Cesar Sosa-Celis non-fatal shooting

Date and Place: January 14, 2026, in Minneapolis

What federal officials initially said: Homeland Security Secretary Kristy Noem said the immigration officer was “assaulted” by Sosa-Salice and others and fired a “defensive shot” out of fear for his life. “What we saw last night in Minneapolis was an assassination attempt by federal law enforcement,” she said.

What came out later: Investigators haven’t released new evidence that led to the charges being dropped, but the cracks were already evident at the January 21 court hearing. The immigration officer’s account of the moments before the shooting differed significantly from that of the defendant and the three eyewitnesses. Available video evidence does not support the officer’s account of the attack with the dog and shovel.

Renee Good fatal shooting

Date and place: January 7, 2026, in Minneapolis

What federal officials initially said: Nome described the incident as an “act of domestic terrorism” committed against ICE officers by a woman who “tried to run them over and hit them with her vehicle.” She said the immigration agent fired “defensively” to protect herself and those around her. Goode died of a bullet wound to the head.

What came out later: Videos shot from multiple angles challenged the administration’s narrative. Shortly before the shooting, Goode was seen at the wheel of his SUV, which was parked diagonally across the street. “I’m not mad at you,” she tells an immigration officer.

Seconds later, another immigration officer grabs the driver’s side door while Good’s wife urges him to “drive, baby, drive.” It’s unclear in the videos if the SUV made contact with ICE Officer Jonathan Ross, who stood in front of the vehicle and fired shots, then shot twice as he quickly sped past the driver’s side of the SUV.

Alex Pretti fatal shooting

Date and place: January 24, 2026, in Minneapolis

What federal officials initially said: Homeland Security spokeswoman Tricia McLaughlin said Pretty approached Border Patrol agents with a handgun and “violently resisted” when they tried to disarm him. One agent, fearing for his life, fired defensively, she said. Preeti was declared dead on the spot. Senior Border Patrol official Greg Bovino claimed that Pretty intended to “massacre law enforcement,” and White House Deputy Chief of Staff Stephen Miller described him as a “would-be murderer.”

What came out later: None of the half-dozen videos collected by investigators showed Pretty carrying his gun, which he had a permit to carry. In the videos, Preeti is seen holding her mobile phone as a masked border patrol officer opens fire.

In a tense hearing Thursday in Washington, U.S. Sen. Rand Paul, Republican of Kentucky, watched a video of the firing of leaders tasked with carrying out Trump’s mass deportation agenda as he repeatedly scrutinized the forceful tactics used by immigration agents. Paul argued that Pretty posed no threat to the agents and that it was clear from the video that he was “backing away every moment.”

The fatal shooting of Silverio Villegas Gonzalez

Date and Place: September 12, 2025, in suburban Chicago

What federal officials initially said: Homeland Security officials said federal agents were pursuing a man with a history of reckless driving who had entered the country illegally. They allege Silverio Villegas Gonzalez drove at the officers and ran over one of them with his car. DHS said the officer fired in fear for his life and was hospitalized with “serious injuries.”

What came out later: Body camera videos from local police contradicted the Trump administration’s account. The footage shows the agent walking away after Villegas shot Gonzalez and dismissed his own injuries as “no big deal.”

An autopsy released in November ruled Villegas-Gonzalez’s death a homicide. The report indicated he was shot at “close range” with wounds to his neck and fingers.

Marimar Martinez non-fatal shooting

Date and Place: October 14, 2025, in Chicago

What federal officials initially said: A DHS news release claimed the driver of the other car involved in the crash with Martinez and a Border Patrol officer was a “domestic terrorist.” An FBI agent said in court documents that she followed a Border Patrol vehicle and struck an officer after exiting the vehicle. The officer was forced to return fire, with the FBI agent allegedly striking Martinez seven times. He was treated at a hospital and arrested on a felony assault charge.

What came out later: Videos emerged that her lawyers say showed agent Charles Exum steering her SUV into her truck.

In a text message presented during the Nov. 5 hearing, Exum appeared to brag about his marksmanship. “I fired 5 rounds and he had 7 holes. Put that in your book boys,” the text read.

The case against him was dismissed.
