Three missing words in cease-fire plan could fool Trump

A key phrase removed from the English version of Iran’s 10-point cease-fire plan with the US could give President Donald Trump an answer.

On Tuesday, the U.S. and Iran agreed to a conditional two-week ceasefire less than 90 minutes before Trump’s 8 p.m. deadline, after which Trump said he would wipe out Iran.

In a statement by Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and posted by Trump on Truth Social, Araghchi claimed that the Iranian military would “cease its defensive operations” and would be allowed to pass through the strait with the “coordination” of the Iranian military.

He added that Trump had accepted the “general outline” of Iran’s 10-point ceasefire plan as a “basis for negotiations.”

However, the Persian-language version of Iran’s 10-point plan included a key detail that the Associated Press reported as leaving out the English versions.

The plan states that the country “continues Iranian control over the Strait of Hormuz, accepts enrichment, removes all primary and secondary sanctions.”

For reasons that remain unclear, the “acknowledgment of enrichment” was absent from the English versions shared with journalists by Iranian diplomats.

Iran’s mission to the United Nations declined to comment to The Associated Press on differences between the English and Persian versions of the ceasefire agreement.

The Daily Beast has reached out to Iran’s mission to the United Nations and the White House for comment.

Trump has repeatedly said his war with Iran was motivated by the perceived nuclear threat and the need to destroy its nuclear capabilities. In June last year, Trump claimed after the US strike that “all of Iran’s nuclear sites had suffered monumental damage, as shown by satellite images. Annihilation is the right word!”

The president launched new strikes on February 28, arguing that Iran’s missile arsenal and nuclear ambitions pose a direct threat to US forces in the region.

The revelations contrast with Trump’s comments to AFP and Truth Social on Tuesday claiming victory in the ceasefire.

“Total and complete victory. 100 percent. No question about it,” Trump told AFP.

He called Iran’s 10-point proposal a “practical basis for negotiations” and stressed that the deal would cover the country’s supply of nuclear weapons-grade uranium.

“It’s going to be taken care of completely, or I’m not going to settle,” Trump said, without elaborating.

Asked about his threat to take out Iran’s civilian power plants and bridges if the deal doesn’t work, the president said, “You’ll have to see.”

The president followed up with a midnight truth social post, claiming it was a “great day for world peace.”

“Iran wants it to happen, they have had enough! So has everyone else! The United States will help build traffic in the Strait of Hormuz. There will be many positive actions! Big money will be made. Iran can begin the reconstruction process.”

Trump said the U.S. is “loading up with supplies” of all kinds and “just hanging around to make sure everything is OK.” He predicted, “This could be the golden age of the Middle East!!!”

After helping negotiate a ceasefire, Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif confirmed on X that he had invited Iran and the US delegation to meet in Islamabad on Friday.
