Tourism, not crops, is big business on Maine farms

Agritourism is becoming big business in the state, according to the 2022 U.S. Department of Agriculture Census. In the five years since the last census, revenue generated by tourism activities on Maine farms has more than doubled.

The USDA released the 2022 census results last month.

Specialty crops and value-added products account for more than half of the state’s agricultural product sales, with direct sales operations to restaurants, pubs or other retailers showing the greatest growth in revenue generated.
