Trump just got a message from Pope Leo that he sure doesn’t like

Pope Leo has not been shy about expressing his views on the state of the United States.

In his first major interview since being elected pope, Leo said he was concerned about “some things that are happening in the kingdom.” He added, “Sometimes decisions are based on economics rather than human dignity and human support.”

Related: Donald Trump is very concerned about protesters wearing one thing in particular, and people are calling out the extreme hypocrisy of law enforcement wearing it.

And in October, he said more directly, “Someone who says I’m against abortion but I’m in favor of the death penalty is not really pro-life. And someone who says I’m against abortion, but I agree with the inhumane treatment of immigrants in the United States, I don’t know if that’s pro-life.”

Earlier this week, the Pope met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and had a direct message for Trump after their meeting.

Here’s what he said when asked about Trump’s peace plan for Ukraine, which critics say heavily favors Russia:

“I haven’t read the whole thing. I think, unfortunately, some of the parts I’ve seen have changed the real alliance between Europe and the United States for many, many years. The comments about Europe, even in recent interviews, I think are trying to break down what needs to be a very important alliance today and in the future.”

“So this is a program that President Trump and his advisers put together. He’s the president of the United States, and he has the authority to do that. There are a lot of things in it that I think a lot of people in the United States would agree with, I think a lot of others would see things differently.”

In response to the criticism, the White House told Newsweek, “President Trump has good relations with many European leaders, but he never shies away from presenting hard truths. The devastating effects of unchecked immigration, and the inability of those immigrants to assimilate, is a concern not only for President Trump, but for Europeans, who have cited their growing immigration concerns.”

“These open-border policies have led to widespread instances of violence, increases in crime, and more, with detrimental effects on the financial sustainability of social safety net programs. As the president remarked to the United Nations General Assembly, his efforts to secure the border saved America from such devastation, and other countries would be wise to follow suit.”
