of John Green Turtles all the way is the latest YA novel to get the film adaptation treatment.
The film, directed by Hannah Markswill follow Aza Holmes (Isabel Merced), a 17-year-old struggling with obsessive-compulsive disorder as she follows the disappearance of a local billionaire while trying to deal with the daily dramas of being a teenager.
“It’s not easy being Aza, but she’s trying… trying to be a good girl, a good friend, and a good student, all while navigating an endless barrage of intrusive, obsessive thoughts that she cannot control them,” reads the official summary. “When she reconnects with Davis (Felix Mallard), Aza is faced with fundamental questions about her potential for love, happiness, friendship, and hope.”
It wasn’t long after the novel hit shelves in 2017 that Green announced a possible film adaptation. Five years later, the author said Entertainment Weekly than the film, which was written by Elizabeth Berger AND Isaac Aptakerit is “everything” he wanted to be.
“It’s funny and human and explores mental illness in a deep and raw way without ever romanticizing or sensationalizing the experience,” he told the paper in January 2024. “I’m so grateful for Hannah, Isabela, Cree [Cicchino]Felix and the entire cast and crew.”
Turtles all the way marks Green’s third screenplay adaptation, following 2014 The fault in our stars AND The city of papers, which was released in cinemas in 2015. While talking to EWMarx explained why tortoisesin particular, it was the story she knew she had to tell.
“I was immediately drawn to the film because I was a fan of John’s and this book,” Marks explained of her decision to direct. “John does an incredible job of telling the story of a teenager’s mental health in a funny, honest and specific way. I relate deeply to the character of Aza. I am honored to be a part of bringing this story to life and loved every minute of working with these fantastic young actors.”
