What is known about the fatal shooting of a woman by an ICE officer in Minneapolis

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Federal officials and local leaders clashed Wednesday over different characterizations of the fatal shooting by an Immigration and Customs Enforcement officer in Minneapolis.

Although President Donald Trump’s administration has described the killing of a 37-year-old mother as an act of self-defense amid its latest immigration crackdown, Minneapolis officials have disputed that narrative.

Here’s what to know about the shooting:

How did it open?

The woman was shot in her car in a residential neighborhood south of downtown Minneapolis, a block from where police killed George Floyd in 2020.

The Honda Pilot pulls forward and a different ICE officer standing in front of the vehicle draws his weapon and immediately fires at least two shots at the vehicle at close range, jumping back as the vehicle moves toward him.

It is unclear from the videos whether the vehicle made contact with the officer. The SUV then accelerates into two cars parked on a nearby curb before crashing to a stop. Witnesses can be heard screaming in shock.

The victim was a ‘wife and mother’.

Renee Nicole McLean Good died of a gunshot wound to the head.

She described herself on social media as a “poet and writer and wife and mother” who hails from Colorado. Calls and messages to her family were not immediately returned.

Public records show McLean Good most recently lived in Kansas City, Missouri, where she and another woman with the same home address started a business last year called Be Good Handiwork.

In a video posted from the scene on social media, a woman Maclean Goode describes as his wife can be seen sitting next to the vehicle and crying. She says the couple had just arrived in Minnesota and had a 6-year-old child.

His killing immediately attracted hundreds of angry protesters. This is at least the fifth death since the aggressive US immigration crackdown launched by the Trump administration last year.

Noam says the officer followed the training

The ICE official has not been publicly identified. Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem described him as just a seasoned officer and said he was injured in June when he was run over by an anti-Ice protester’s vehicle.

He said the officer was hit by a vehicle during Wednesday’s shootout and taken to the hospital. He has since been discharged.

“Our officer followed his training, what he was taught to do in that situation, and took actions to protect himself and protect his fellow law enforcement officers,” Noem said.

Noem said the officers were trying to push the vehicle out of the snow when a group of protesters descended on them. The officers had just completed an operation and were trying to return to headquarters, she said.

The woman was blocking officers with her vehicle, and refused to comply with commands from law enforcement, Noem said.

“She then armed her vehicle, and she attempted to run the law enforcement officer over,” Noem said. “This appears to be an attempt to kill or cause bodily harm to the agents, an act of domestic terrorism.”

Local leaders disputed the story

Police Chief Brian O’Hara gave no indication the driver was trying to harm anyone when describing the shooting to reporters.

Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey called Noem’s account of the events “garbage,” adding that he had seen videos of the shooting that showed it was not self-defense and was avoidable. Frey criticized the federal deployment of more than 2,000 officers in the twin cities of Minneapolis and St. Paul.

“They’re tearing families apart. They’re wreaking havoc on our streets, and in this case, quite literally killing people,” Frey said.
