UC Berkeley Criticized After Anti-Israel Group Hosts Failed Suicide Bomber As Guest Speaker: ‘Cesspool’

A chapter of a far-left organization at the University of California, Berkeley’s law school closed Palestinian Political Prisoners’ Day earlier this week with a message from a failed suicide car bomber jailed in Israel for eight years.

UC Berkeley Law Students for Justice for Palestine shared a video on their Instagram account from convicted car bomber Isra Jabis, who thanked his Western counterparts for supporting his cause.

“First of all, I want to say thank you [the students] For their attention, for their heart to listen,” Zabis said, according to English translated subtitles attached to the video.

“For many reasons, even their presence is enough to make us feel—as freed Palestinian prisoners—that someone cares about us.”

Jabis was imprisoned in Israel from 2015 to 2023 for attempting to detonate a car bomb during a traffic stop. The incident happened near an area where Israeli soldiers gather and try to hitchhike. Both Jabis and an Israeli officer, Moshe Chen, were badly burned in the terror attack.

While in prison, Jabis made headlines for demanding cosmetic surgery on her badly scarred face. He was released in a prisoner exchange in November 2023 when the Israeli government attempted to free those held hostage by Hamas militants on October 7, 2023.

“There are people who stand in solidarity with us, who support us and do not abandon us,” Zabis said in the video.

“Your presence – especially as law students – gives us hope that there is some humanity left, someone to support us in the future, to carry our message to the international community and to promote our call to free Palestinian prisoners, as well as free society from slavery and bigotry.

Critics at X blasted both event organizers and UC Berkeley.

“Berkeley being a leftist cesspool is not surprising to you,” said one X user.

“Muslims must be laughing at the insane stupidity of the ‘enlightened’ useful idiots in the West,” said another.

“This is what keeps me up at night. I don’t know how the world rewrites morality to suit their political agenda,” said another.

A UC Berkeley law spokesperson said the school’s hands are tied.

“As a public university, UC Berkeley has a non-discretionary obligation to uphold and uphold the First Amendment in a completely content-neutral manner,” said Alex Shapiro, assistant dean for communications. “We do not have the legal ability to sanction or censor constitutionally protected speech.

“However, UC Berkeley has repeatedly informed the student body that, if any campus community member feels threatened, they are encouraged to contact the Office for Harassment and Discrimination Prevention. OPHD provides assistance to victims, investigates all allegations, and the campus takes appropriate action following any findings.”
